About

Background

As part of the 5th International Conference on Interdisciplinary Humanities and Communication Studies, this symposium examines the unprecedented transformation of the media industry and how media organizations can adapt to these changes. This transformation is driven by rapid advances in artificial intelligence, evolving audience behaviors, and significant changes in the digital information ecosystem. Traditional traffic sources are becoming less predictable as search engines, social media platforms, and AI-powered interfaces redefine how users discover and consume news. The emergence of AI-generated search results and AI Overviews is particularly reshaping the relationship between publishers and audiences, raising important questions about content visibility, referral traffic, monetization, and the long-term sustainability of quality journalism. At the same time, these technological developments create opportunities for innovation in editorial processes, audience engagement, and business models. Understanding these changes is essential for media organizations seeking to remain relevant, competitive, and financially sustainable while continuing to fulfill their public service mission and maintain trust in an increasingly AI-driven information environment.

Goal/Rationale

This symposium aims to provide participants with a comprehensive overview of the current challenges and opportunities facing digital publishers in the age of artificial intelligence. It will begin with a keynote presentation examining the latest trends in audience behavior, digital traffic, and content discovery, with particular attention to the growing impact of AI Overviews and other generative search experiences on news organizations. The presentation will discuss recent evidence on how these developments are affecting publishers' visibility, audience acquisition, and revenue opportunities, while highlighting strategies that media organizations are adopting to strengthen resilience and support sustainable journalism.

Following the keynote, participants will take part in a practical collaborative exercise designed to explore how these industry trends can be translated into actionable strategies within their own organizations. The session will conclude with an interactive discussion and question-and-answer segment, allowing participants to reflect on the findings presented, exchange experiences, and discuss practical approaches to navigating digital transformation while preserving editorial quality and sustainability.

Scope

This symposium is intended for researchers, media executives, editors, journalists, digital audience specialists, communication professionals, and policymakers interested in the future of news media. Participants will gain evidence-based insights into the evolving publishing ecosystem and develop a deeper understanding of how artificial intelligence is transforming audience relationships, content distribution, and business sustainability.

Through both expert presentation and collaborative discussion, attendees will have the opportunity to critically examine emerging industry trends, share experiences across different media contexts, and identify practical approaches for strengthening audience engagement and organizational resilience. The interactive format encourages active participation, enabling attendees to ask questions, discuss the presented findings, and explore innovative strategies that support sustainable, audience-centered journalism in a rapidly changing digital environment.
